Boarding
"What a task it is to form a man. How difficult is it. How much patience is required. But is there anything greater?"
Fr Jean-Claude Colin, Founder of the Society of Mary
At Redwood House, our mission is to cultivate a residential Catholic and Marist community that nurtures students' faith, academic potential, leadership, and sporting and cultural excellence. It serves as a supportive home away from home, where lifelong friendships are woven and cherished memories are created.
The essence of college and boarding life revolves around the values of Faith, Unity, Courage, Support, Humility, and living in the way of Mary. These principles profoundly influence our boarding community, encouraging boarders to embrace their Catholic and Marist values, evolving into the best version of themselves, as intended by God.
Our aim is to empower and inspire boarders to depart Redwood House well-equipped for the real world's challenges, fondly reminiscing about their time here.
Redwood House consists of 3 floors and 3 residential corridors. The ground floor houses two residential corridors for Year 9-11 boarders and a communal area. The second floor is dedicated to Year 11-13 boarders. The top floor features a Learning Hub for study purposes and a spacious communal area for relaxation.
All boarders enjoy uniform low-wall, built-in furniture in their dorm rooms, offering privacy and a quiet personal space. The dormitory capacity varies: Year 9 holds 8 beds, Year 10 and 11 hold 6 beds, Year 12 has 4 beds, and Year 13 boarders either have their own room or share in doubles.
Boarders have full access to all College facilities, including the Chapel, a modern gymnasium and weights room, basketball courts, expansive fields, an outdoor swimming pool, music studios, a library, and more.
A strong emphasis on academic achievement runs through the boarding school, evident in our annual NCEA results where boarders consistently outperform day students. Boarders are expected to maintain a minimum 80% pass rate for assessments, with the 2022 average pass rate across Year 11 to Year 13 boarders standing at 82.67%.
Supervised study sessions are organized for all boarders in multi-year level groups. Each study session is a minimum of one hour, with extra time allocated for those who missed sessions or need additional support.
Teachers from the college and local institutions supervise these study sessions, providing assistance and guidance. By Year 12, senior boarding students are encouraged to take charge of their study management, readying them for future learning ventures in NCEA, tertiary education, workplaces, and beyond.
Transitioning into a new "home away from home" can be an adjustment, particularly for Year 9 boarders. To aid in this, each Year 9 student is paired with a Year 13 mentor who acts as a guiding presence. The Director of Boarding, boarding school staff, and other college support personnel are readily available to offer assistance when needed.
Living on campus positions our boarders at the heart of College activities. Redwood House consistently contributes members to top sports teams, Kapa Haka and Poly Groups, as well as other extracurricular associations. Boarders boast a robust legacy of leadership within the student body, with numerous recent Head Boys originating from Redwood House. Leadership avenues are encouraged and nurtured within Redwood House, fostering a servant leadership mindset in all aspects of life.
Boarding fees, are separate from day-school contributions and are determined by the St Patrick's College Silverstream Board of Proprietors, and reviewed annually. Payment is required one term in advance. For further details, please refer to Boarding Fees.
Enrollment for boarders at St Patrick's College Silverstream is primarily open to Year 9 students, with limited spaces available in other year levels. In line with the College's Special Character, preference is given to families with established connections to the Catholic Church, following the guidelines set forth by the Catholic Bishops of New Zealand in 2003.
